Being on constant guard with Candra had its ups and downs. After her little visit with Eldon, I saw no point in trying to mark her as I had planned. I knew she'd be alright for a short time, but I needed to get in touch with myself—my human self. I do this every so often. My life may have been taken from me, but by God, they would not take that part of me which is my soul. I would not forget to live, to remember my human side. This is the only thing I can call my own, the part of me that keeps me sane.

I headed toward town to my favorite tavern: Duffy's. Even though it didn't look like much on the outside, sitting in a corner, it had character on the inside. Opening the door to the familiar smells and sounds, the laughter of friends, family gathering around a table … it was like coming home. People didn't notice me. I veiled myself in darkness, something I learned to do by accident. A neat little trick I tended to forget about and I had to remind myself to practice it when out in public.

I sat in the far corner and watched. The food here was delectable, though I didn't crave it and had no need for it. You'd probably wonder why I even bothered coming in. I'll tell you, other than not having the pleasure of conversation; it was the only place where I felt human. I could forget who I am, and just watch those around me. I'd be crazy if I didn't say my reality bothered me from time to time. I did miss the companionship of another human, one with whom I could talk about the day, or make plans for the … future. I missed food, too. The closest I've come to eating anything resembling food would be a light broth and maybe a vegetable here and there; but for the most part, it would always be blood.

As I watched, I noticed a young lady, likely in her twenties, with blond hair, blue eyes, a curvy figure, and a beautiful smile. She was in deep conversation with a patron who sat at the bar. A gentleman dressed in jeans, a sweater, and a cap, sporting some local football team. From her heart, I could tell she found him attractive. Her pulse raced every time he'd say something to her. You know, that quick little jolt your heart does when meeting someone you like. I, myself, was having those jolts as well, but not because I found her attractive, although she really was. No—it was the way her blood pulsed, the sound of it in my head. It delighted me like exquisite music, and she smelled delectable.

I stayed until her shift was over, which wasn't long. Apparently, I had come at the right moment. She said her goodbyes and walked out the door. Then, I followed right behind her. I don't know what got into me; I wasn't going to kill her, just maybe sample a bit.
